BIG CATALGOUE

EDITORIAL DESIGN

The goal of this book is to follow Bjarke Ingel’s Group (BIG) through their catalogue of architecture across the world over the last two decades.

"Traditionally, architecture is dominated by two extremes: one that is very wild and expressive, but also expensive and unrealistic, and the other—that is practical and rational, but may also be unambitious and uninspiring. We try to occupy the overlap between the two extremes... "

This quote from founder Bjarke Ingels, explains the idea of the "Pragmatic Utopian", which serves as the basis for my editorial design approach. Inspiring the use of strict rigidity in the use of the grid, structured typography, justified typesetting, as well as black and white imagery to speak to the pragmatic. Where the utopian is mostly featured in the photography of the architecture itself, but also the varied gridded layouts where no two pages are the same.

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL

Instead of displaying architectural work by category—such as culture, education, infrastructure, etc.—this book examines through the perspective of location. Bringing the idea of a travel guide and a catalogue together to form a unique publication that tackles both jobs simultaneously.
